THE ALICO ALICO Building in Waco, Texas

One of the first things you'll come to notice when driving/arriving into Waco is the sky scrapper of all sky scrappers-The Alico Building. The Alico is one of the historical land marks of Waco and the place I live in for 40hrs a week. Yes, I work on the 15th floor (really the 14th since the 13th is labeled).  The view is incredible. I enjoy the morning sun and looking out into the great city of Waco. A few days last week Waco had server fog during the morning hours (basically zero visibility). On those morning, I felt like I was floating in the clouds as looked out windows! ........Anyway, how about some fun filled facts....I know your interested...way interested.

The ALICO building stands 22 stories tall at the corner of Austin Avenue and 5th Street in the center of beautiful downtown Waco. Once the tallest building in the southwest United States, the ALICO Building symbolizes stability and strength.

  1. ALICO stands for the Amicable Life Insurance Company
  2. Groundbreaking for the twenty-two building occurred in August of 1910. Completion was October of 1911.
  3. The building was once the tallest in Texas and the tallest west of the Mississippi. The building's height is 282 feet to the observation tower, and 303 feet to the flagpole.
  4. At first it was to have 20 floors, but when the builder found out that the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas would also have 20 floors, he up it by one. The builder of Adolphus decided to go up to 21, so the builder of the Alico added a 22nd floor, making it the tallest building south of the Maxon Dixie line.
  5. Construction was documented by Waco photographer Fred Gildersleeve and the photo collection is now part of the Texas Collection at Baylor University
  6. The building had its own electric generators and a water source from artesian springs.
  7. Building engineers piped this spring water to a restaurant across the street from the building (Chris's Restaurant) - without disrupting traffic (and without a permit).
  8. Waco's Old Corner Drugstore moved from its former location of Austin and 4th to the building in 1912
  9. Biplanes from Rich Field circled the building for its opening. The building has since provided its own aerial views of the city and the Brazos River.
  10. People working inside the building witnessed the destruction of downtown Waco during the tornado of May 11, 1953. The ALICO Building swayed, but received hardly any damage.
  11. There is currently no observation room, platform or lounge available to the public.

...Isn't history grand! Well, boys and girls...that's our tour for today.  I Hope you enjoyed your trip and please feel free to stop by our gift shop to purchase a little souvenir ....

Yes, that's right folks, get your cotton here....
